WRECK OF A GERMAN SHIP.
AN OUTBREAK OF FIRE. TWO BOATS MISSING. pJt TBiiXQßArn.] (Per Mail Steamer at Auckland.) SAN FRANCISCO, 27th June. Nineteen mea ot the crew of the German ship Agnes went to their graves in the sea. off Gape Horn when she was partly burned and went to the bottom. Captain Henry Behrens and ten seamen were found drifting in. a small boat by the American ship Aryan, whioh arrived at this port last night with, the rescued men. The Agnes.was bound from Shields to Valparaiso with conl. On 10th March she "was working against heavy head storms and seas to get around Cape Horn into the Pacific when a fire was discovered in the cargo forward. Many toDs of burning coal were jettisoned, and water was poured through the hatches in the effort to quench the flames, but all to no effect. The fire gradually gained headway, gases formed in the hold; and it exploded, blowing off the hatches. On 20th March tho ship was no longer tenable, and Captain Behrens gave orders to abandon the craft. One boat in command of 'the first mate held twelve men, the second mate's boat held five, and ten seamen accompanied the captain. For three days the boats remained by the burning ship. Then, when they were 55 miles off Cape Horn, the little boats hoisted their sails and headed for land. The boats soon separated. The high blutts of the C&pe had just loomed in sight when the Aryan appeared, and a boatload of the shipwrecked men were soon aboard the American vessel. Not many minutes after a severe gale swept tha ocean, and the Aryan had all she could do to care for herself in the storm, i Though a sharp watch was kept for the otter two boats, they were not seen, and there appeared to be no hope of their escaping death. > j
