Sir W. J. Steward returned from the South this morning. Bishop Mules, of Nelson, was a passenger by the Rotoiti, which arrived from Nelson last night. Mr. J. C. Ball has resigned tho Secretaryship of the Wellington branch of the Independent Political Labour League in order to devote himself to the General Secretaryship of the League. The Native Health Officer (Dr. Pomare) has left for Peria, North Auckland, to investigate an outbreak of fever in the Maori settlement there. There have already been seven deaths. Another old Crimean veteran, one o( the storming party at Seba6topol, passed away at his residence, Normanby-street, yesterday — the aamiversary of his arrival iv the colony 31 yeais ago. The deceased 1 , Mr. George Collyer, wa: one of Newtown's early settlera. He was for seventeen years employed at the Government Insurance Office, but retired a little over two yeais ago. He leaves a widow and family of four. The oldestson is in' Sydney, the second is Mr. A. Collyer, butcher, of Kilbirnie, .and the daughters are Mrs. M'Kenzie, of Christchurch, and Mrs. W. Necs, of Waikanae.
