Wharton, "Jvho 'is under sentence ol death on a •charge of murder, has, it as said, admitted 'his identity as Butter, who made himself notorious in 'Dunedin Gom© years ago. (Received July 17, 12.3 p.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. James Wharton, th© murderer of William Munday, was hanged at Brisbane this morning. The condemned man slept well, and ate a hearty breakfast. On the scaffold he expressed sorrow for the deed, and said he hoped that if there was a heaven he would receive mercy. WKarton -was greatly agitated. His head was almost torn from the body. He mad© no reference to his supposed identity with Butler.
