"THE CINGALEE."
APPEAL CASE SETTLED. • r>*ESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received' July 17, 9.2 a.m.) LONDON, 16th July. The appeal by Mr. George Edwardes I in "The Cingalee" case has been settled by payment of £2000 and the withdrawal of imputations. Some months ago Captain Fraser, author of "Hanjiahn, or the" Lotus Girl," sued Mr. George Edwardes for damages, alleging that "The Cingalee," of which Mr. Edwardes was set down as author, was in idea and general scheme derived from his unpublished play. The hearing of th© case caused a great amount of interest in theatrical circles. A verdict for £3000 was given for Captain Fraser. The fact that Captain Frasor's play had been through the hands of Mr. Edwardes and his staff, and much discussed by them, and, further, that plaintiff had been remunerated, probably proved fatal to the defence. Mr. Edwardes appealed against the decision, and now the case has apparently been amicably settled.
