HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated liondon, 15th instant:— "Tho mutton market is quiet; light weights are getting very scarce, and holders are firm. Tho average price to-day for Canterbury nmtton (light weights) is 4£d per lb; for other JNorth Island mutton, 4£d per lb; for Canterbury brand (heavy weights), 4d per lb; for other North Island mutton, 3|d per lb The lamb market is weakor, with a downward tendency. Light weights aro extremoly scares, the market for which is tan. The average price to-day for New /ieaJand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 5Jd to sjfd per lb; for heavy weights and for brands other thaa Canterbury, s|d per lb. The weather of late has beer unfavourable for the sale of wheat, and the supply exceeds the demand. Thero is no Change in prices since last report. Tho butter market is quiet but firm, with no change in prices since last report. The cheese market is steady, but demand only moderate. Tho t/erago price to-day for finest D\ew Zealand cheeeo is. 553 per cwt. for white and 52s for coloured. The hemp market is quiet, and small business is doing. There is a better demand for distant deliveries. The price of New Zealand hemp, 'good fair Wellington' grade, on spot to-day, per ton, is £26 10s; August and September shipments, £28 per ton. The Manila, hemp market is very firm, owing to America buying. The price of Manila hemp, 'fair current' grade, to-day is £38 per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, with more enquiry. The average price for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b per bushel, on spot, is 53s per cwt. Wheat, on spot, is extremely scarce. There is a general and active demand for wheat to arrive before tho end of the month. The English crop accounts are very' encouraging. New Zealand oats, short (sparrowbille), ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b, 235; New Zealand tots, Danich, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3201b, 17s 6d. The market i 3 quiet, but holders are firm. New Zealand peas, f.a.q. (old crop), per 5041b, 325. The- market is firm, bat little is doing New Zealand peas (Partridge), per 5041b, 395; New Znakind peas (blue); per 5041b, 28s 6d. Tho market is quiet but steady. Mr. A. H. Atkinson held his first Peilding -wool, skin, and hWe sale on Thursday, when he offered 50 bales and 120 bag lots of wool, 100 hides, and 800 Bkino. Competition, was keen, prices realised being on a par with Wellington and Napier sales.
