The coinmil tee's recommendations wcro nil adopted. Three .ipplicntions were >h~ clinod. Included amongst llu.se wus one fiomthe Intone 'lVchnicfil School, that the Education lioard bear cost of p,,is (ittiii!;s for rooms uv«l by tecbniial tl.i.s.si'i. The Hoard consented to the election of gymnasium at iM.irtinborough School, tho building to be tlu> property ol the .Board nnd subject to the commit'tcc's control. A report by n special committee concerning truant officers recommend* d th.it tho present truant officers, at Mastciton, P.ihiiilua, and Orcytown be dispensed with, and that one officer, to be controlled fiom Wellington, bo appointed to act for the whole education district. This recommendation wa? made partly on tho {{round of economy. Mr. Hogg condomned the proposal. It was !i suggestion to leveit to a sv.it em that had been previously tried and 'found unsatisfactory. The oilicer appointed at MaNleiton hud dono excellent woik. 'Iho suggestion wii.s- siinp'y tidiculous ; and as to the pioposed waving, tho saving would bo a morn bagatelle. Messrs. M'Uomild. Uiicliaiiiin, nnd Feist also condemned the proposal. Mr. Huchaimn doubted if one man cpuld cover tho ground. Air. Field expressed n similar opinion, and said ho would like to hear from tho special committee (tho Chairman of the Board, its Seeietnry, and tho two Inspectors) tJio reasons upon which they based their recommendations. The Cliniinian said there was no debire to minimise the services of the country truant inspectors; but it was a fact Hint at Kketahmm, where there had been no oilicer for thioe months past, tho averago nt tendance was about as good as u.t Masterton, wheio tho truant oflicer had been labouring. The figures wore tespective'.y 89.6 and 89.1. One olllcci should bo able to contiol Iho district ; thero were only 152 schools here, while in OUigo theio were 220 schools, which were cllieiently looked after by one tiuant inspector. Theio were three thousand inoro childieu there, nnd their attendanco waft much higher than ouu. Howevnr, the Chainuan was willing (hat the repoit be leforred b.ick if the Board \va*< of opinion that one countiy inspector nhould bo letained. Mr. W. Allan objected to the report ! bemi; vefencd b.ick. j Mr. Hogg moved "That the truant ofltI Pers of M.istefton and Grey town be each paid £50 per annum, on t lie undciblandlng thut they \isit tho several schools wjt.hui the retucotive district*,"

Mr. M'Don.ild .seconded tho motion. 'I lie t'li.iiinun objeeUd to it, and asked why hliould tlio two inspectors mentioned bo given piefercnte over the other iuhpeuiois of the distiict Mr. Allan b.iitl tin- piopos,\l w<is 111011Mrous. it w.\.s really .i piopostil tf> increate by £25 the wil.uy of one man wliofo wink had I.iUly betn though' ui>N.iti>lucli)ry. Mr. Fei.it suggested that (lie motion be altcicd to pi o vide for one district in frteud of two. Kvenlually the motion was withdrawn, iiiul lhe repoit was icferred back to tin' committee with a lerommcndiition lli.it thu report be aid red in the dnection inditntul by Mr. llogg'h niolion as altered to meet Mr. Feiht's suggestion. In icspeci lo & disputed eleolioh of a Sciiool Commit tc at West T.u.ilahi, the Board decided that the fact.s dtsclavd did not iiuiku llio Horn. l feel it necessaty to order another elect :<>n. A similar resolution in icg.ud lo an Kpuni dispute was n i rived at Tho Hoard lesolvod that it was inadvisable to nurch.isi; the residence of Mr. Beddingfield at llumua; that the clerk ol works attend to necessary lepaira al J'lketuluiua School and le.iidcncei; and that small noccMMiry work.s to outbuildings nt L'ongaroa nnd Makomako be curried ovit. A tank is to be procured for llamua School. Tho Hoard was asked by the Education Department to prepare plans for a two-stuiy brick building at South Wellington. It was mentioned that tht Government desired the building to be one of two stories. The Chairman considered it inadvisable to erect two-siory buildings when sufficient ground was available for single-story building*. The members of the Board were all of like opinion, and it whs resolved to reply Uianking tho Education Department for its proposal to build in brick, out expressing tho Board's disapproval of two-story buildings.
