WELLINGTON BOXING ASSOCIATION.

o NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. A meeting of the Wellington Boxing Association was held lust evening, Mr. It. \V. M'Villy presiding. A number of matleis of general interest were dealt with, especially in rcfereuce. to the New Zealand Championship Meeting, which is to bo held ;it the Theatre. Roynl on 6lh find 7th July. From this meeting tho New Zealand representatives nt the Australasian championships, lo bo held in August, will bo selected. Entries will close on 24th June. A letter was raid front tho N.Z. Association drawing attention to several mutters that- hud been discussed by that body in connection with thu forthcoming championships. With regard to the report that tho Wellington Committee contemplated putting on the programme an event for professionals, the Council was strongly against bticlt a course. It was considered (1) that the championships themselves wero of sufliciciit attraction to new 1 , no extraneous item to draw the public; (2) that in view of tho liabilities under which the association laboured in having to send a team to Ui isbdiiu this year, and another I cam to Sydney in 190*6, it was imperative thai every care should bo exercised in keeping down the expenses in connection with tho championships to the lowest possible point, m keeping with the o.urying out of them in a manner satisfactory to Iho competitors and tho public; (o) that the matter for catering for professionals was one for local associations to deal with wheu considering their local competitions, and except in very special ciicumstanccs could not be entertained in connection with the national UMinpionshipN. As to a suitable icferee it was decided to recommend ! that Major Chaffey be selected, and that two untpiivs bo appointed to act with him. As the Council was no longer a promoting body, and was thus deprived of its only source of levcnue, it was decided th-it those local associations which were- financially hound should bo asked to contribute towards tho expense enUiled in wilding tin 1 loam to Ilrishono. Mr Mouteitore (Vice-President of New Zealand Doxiug Association) had notified liis wish to donate two guineas towards tho pureha.se. of a tiophy, the destination of which was left to the Council. It was decided to award it to the com- j petitor who was considered by tho judges ; and tbo refereo to bavo given the most i Jicientittc display at tho New Zealand championship competition. The opinion was expressed by a member of the Committee that there should be an exhibition of scientific boxing, and it was also pointed out that the management of the meeting might safely bo left to tho Wellington Asnoei.it ion, which would do everything in its power in its own and tho sport's interest, and iv tho Interest of tho New Zealand Association. On (ho motion of Mr. W. Cott'ey, it was eventually decided the Association enter into negotiations with W. Murphy to give a professional exhibition of boxing, tho Association to pay his expenses; tho contest to be of six rounds on ono night. It is probable that a local expert exponent of tho art will pub on the gloves against Murphy, and this contest in itsolf should prove a great draw, Murphy having at oue time been tho champion light-weight of tho world. 110 is still in good form, and has recently been boxing in Australia aud New Zealand. It was stated by tho Secretary that tho competition rules wero now awaiting the approval of the Qovernor-in-Council, and were expected to come to hand at an early dale. Major CluiftVy was appointed to referee in tho championships, an amendment in tho direction of securing a local man being defeated. On tho motion of Mr. Coffoy it was resolved that a sub-conimitteo bo appointto select- the representatives of the Wellington Association to compete in tho N.Z. championship events, and be instructed to make the necessary arrangements for a private exhibition, etc. Mr. J. H. Coates intimated that, ho was unable, to accept, tho positiou of Vieo-President to tho Association, and Mr. 0. "B. Roiiers Mas elected to tho position. Dr. IT. J.
