Althougli tho wintry weather prevailing locally to-duy ir fairly general ovor this island, the atmosphoric conditions in the South uro not ho uncomprisingly Antarctic. Some very low temperatures were reported at 9 a.m., tho lowest reading being 28deg. ut Clyde, 31deg. at Queenstown, 33deg at Bnlcluthn, and 37deg at Invercargill. The highest reading wens 57deg. ab Cape Maria In tho four cities, the temperatures were: Auckland, Mdeg; Wellington, 48deg; Christchurch, 42deg. ; and Dunedin, 40 deg. An automatic triple signal, for use ab railway crossings, has been invented by a Wanganui resident and patented by v local syndicate. Tlio principal feature of tho signal is tihat no train can como within the zone of its action without bringing to view tira discs of the. signal to show the words " close " and " danger," an succession, and no train can retreat without turning them to show "clear" and "safety," as the case may.be. The alarm apparatus is contained in a box 12ft high, and when tho train is within tho danger zono of 250 or 500 yards it automatically sets alurm bells ringing. The third system of alarm is by menus of white and red glasses which may be illuminated at night. The throo bystoms may be worked together or separately, as desired. The whole system is controlled by an application of eccentric action applied to concentric wheels by cables running up and down tho line. The patent has been protected tlnpughont the United Slates, Great Britain, mid other countries. Tho Minister for Railway* is to be approached by tho syndicate with a viow to having the alarmo set up on New Zealand railway crossings.
