MIRAMAR BOROUGH PROPOSALS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sjr, — I notice in your report of the last meeting of the Mimmar Horough Council that Councillor Witt suggested that some of the ratepayers should bo asked to act with the Council in the question of arriving at v price for the contemplated purchase of the Miramar Ferry Company by the Borough. I think that the suggestion is an excellent one, inasmuch asall the Councillors, with, perhaps, one exception, are directly interested as sliareliolders in f hu compnny. Even the Mayor is largely inteiested, having been, a director of the company up to the time of his election na Mayor of the Borough. HLs resignation of the directorship does not alter the position, that he i» still a laige shareholder. Councillor M'Grath'e reply to Councillor Witt's suggestion — namely, that it would mean asking every ratepayer to meet the directors of the company, us they could not discriminate as to who hhould be selected to act — is utterly illogical. Would it not be a graceful act (seeing that the personnel of the Council and the Ferry Company is practically <lie Kline) for the former body to adopt Councillor Witt's suggestion, and request the unsuccessful candidates at fclio lust election to «ct with them in this matter, they being semi-public men with, large support in the district, and not in any way conuected with the company. In is, I know, M'ouM be an unusual proceeding, but I contend that the whole mutter is of an unusual nature. By the appointment of these gentlemen as delegales for the disinterested ratepayers ifc would largely tend to remove any misapprehension in our minds. They being all business men, and not representing any private interests, would, I feel wire, do every credit to the trust placed in them. This would not be the first occasion on which outside aid has been called upon, by a public body, tho Wellington City , Council having appointed two New Zea- • land gentlemen, Mho happened to be in London at the time, to act with it* Electrical Engineer when that official waa sent Home to enter into contract* in con* nection with the installation of our electric trams. In conclusion, I express the hopa that the Council will, for its own credit, if nothing else, give details, and I also separate any future schemes for ' winch loans are being asked.— l am, etc.^ CLEAN POTATO.
