KUROPATKIN'S SUCCESSOR.
» General Linevitch, "the old grey wolf of Manchuria," who has heen nominated successor to General Kuropatkin, entered the army us a young" mnu, and already in 1859 was fighting the warliko Circassians and tho wild tribes of Dagestan, who wero then led by their prophet and leader Schamyl. General Linevitch afterwards took part in tho Crimean war, and was wounded in tho left hand nnd foot. It had been decided to amputate the General's foot, but tho wound healed and tho operation was not ncce&sary. From that time tho old soldier has been lamo and cannot get along without a stick. General Linevilch is extremely popular among tho Russian soldiers, who simply worship "Papa Linovitch," as they call him. It was Linevitch who organiml tho Siberian regiments and planned tho expedition in ...ortheui Korea. It is a mistake to boliovo that General Linevitch is nn ignorant man, as lias been assorted by .some papoie. Ho is originally descended from an old Polish family, and is by birth a nobleman and well educated. The old General, who is noted for his fiery and energetic nature, is «iid to havo had frequent differences with Kuropatkin, and perhnps this is the reason why this trusted nnd experienced soldier has so long been kept in tho background, notwithstanding his brilliant scrvico in Manchuria and China during the Boxer rising, and his great knowledge of warfaro in tho Far East. In fact, it was General Linevitch who, notwithstanding the awful carnago and disorder attending Iho disaster of Mukden, brought his army into Thieling almost intact and ni good order, whilst the armies under Bilderling and Kaulbars weio, to a great .extent, annihilated. Although he has been given the command at the eleventh hour, this aged nnd experienced soldier may, in somo measure, help to rclrievo Russia's disasters. — M.A.P.
