M.A.P., in a referenco to Sir Womyra Reid, state* that when ho was n reporter on the Newcastle Journal the representative of v rival newspaper got ahead of him with the account of a colliery explosion at Hartley in 1862. The Northumberland public had boon waiting anxiously to learn the fnle of tho entombed miners. Keportciß of tho Newcastle papers on tho spot got the news directly it was known. Sir Wemyss Uoid and a frieiyl managed to lure a pony and trap to take them to Newcastle. One lopoiter could not get a conveyance for lovo or money. Seeing a goods train approaching, ho got on the line and waved his hamU. Hither than i an over him the driver stopped. The young man explained who he w.is, and added that the driver and hi« assistant would bo well paid if they could tako him to a branch station near, so tint he could catch the passenger train to Newcastle, they did m>, and by dint of much Meani pressure the repniter was able to wrnmblo into tho puflMiig-r train from (he wionfj side. hour. That young repoiter is now holding 11 high position as a journalist in London; Sir Weniyss and ho were great friends.
