New Zealand, to-day. After Dull had been disposed of fio Hensutionidly, Hill and Trumpet* coon put a different aspect on all'ans. Tiuinpor opened his account with a nice drive for a couple, and notched a single olf the last ball of tho over. Fisher took up tho bowling at tho railway end, und Tiuniper got his third ball away for tluee, and oil' the next Hill luckily snicked four, and concluded the over with another four to leg. Trunipcr got hard on to the opening ball of Callaway's next, over, but sound fielding saved. Smart tunning between tho wickets, however, for singles brought 20 up. Both butamen commenced to iscore steadily, aided in aoiuo instances by erratic Holding, Sims being an especial culprit. A succession of singles saw 30 hoieted after 25 minutes' play, and shortly afterwards Trumper brought his individual quota to 20, by beautifully placing a cut through tho slips. Both bowlers were well on tho spot, Callaway keeping the batsmen especially quiet. Hill, however, _broko tho run of singles, getting tho Cantorbury bowler finely to leg for n brace and a fouror off successive balls. Trumper \va» meanwhilo contenting himself with somo forceful blocking, which produced an occasional single, livened by somo excellent placing through the fieldsmen. Tho majority ol the runs was made off Fisher. With tho wcoro at 55 Uphain took tho ball from Fisher, and Hill greeted him with four to tho leg boun1 dury. Another single came to Hill, and four to Trumper, who also notched off Upkam's first over. Hill brought his total to 30 by a .singlo oil Callawuy, and Sim» retrieved his previous hiiluiua by fitnnrtly fielding somo crisp cttta by Trumpor off the same bowler. Seventy was signalled after a, succession of singles — the result of nicety of judgment between tho wickets by the batsmen, smart fielding nullifying eomo big hits. With the total at 76 (Tiumper 42, Hill 31), Bennett went on in placo of Callaway, Hill facing tho new bowler. "" A smartly-run sing.c was the only outcome of tho over. Trumper livened up somewhat, and his next scoring strokes wuio boundary drives off Uphain, followed by three to log off the want* bowler. Facing Bennett, ho skied him in sufu dcop lie id for a brace, thus passing lv« hulf-cen-tury. Trumper monopolised the bowling for a time, and consistent scoring by him brought a hundred up. After- v period of inactivity Hill commenced oil the Ncond contury with a single off Upluim, and Trumper placed tho Wellington bowler's next dUivtiy to log for four. After numerous singles Hill got a lucky two otf Bonnott behind tho wiakots, bringing hi» ncoro to 40 out of a total of 110. Thia wut followed by a drive for two off the iimiie bowlur. Fisher replaced Uphum at the inilway end at this «tago, but tho rate of tho run-gtUing was by no meani 1 modilied, both batsmen scoring fairly ovenly. Ollivier und Blucklock were doing Bomo good work hi the oiiltlrld, while cloaor J« Graham was couspicuuus for flinaVtness. A «ufo "skior" olf Bouuett for a single brought Trumper's total lo 180 uftur 80 minutes' ba-tUng. Facing .Jpiuh^r Trumper drove a fou*cr, but in trying to repi-at tho dose two balls later he was caught by Urn ham ut midoif. 132—2—84. Trumper played- line cricket all round tho wicket, ajid although he took no libortioa, he showed ! capital defence, lonvencd by brillinut uggrensivene.vj, Noble partnered Hill, mid opened with a cut for three off Fisher. Another thieo was credited to tho same batunun off Bpnnott'B next ovor. Then Fiwhor howled tho fiiat maiden over of tho day to Noble. A fouror off Bennett enabled Hill to pass his hulf-contury. With tho (.otat at 146 Bennett gave way to Callaway, und Noblo, whose »core wa<- 10, gave a ponsiblu chanco in the I slips, Blncklock just failing to reach the ] ball, and U'o runs were rugisttired instead. Play then slowed considerably, i some splendid driving strokes by Hill I causing the scoro to gradually mount, and just on Ihe four o'clock adjournment Bennett relieved Fisher, and a fouror by Hill off the, chanetf brought 163 up— . Hill (not out) 66, Noble (not out) IJ. 1 On icHumnii! fisher took up the bowling at the northern ond, and sent down a mairlen to Noble. Fisher's hist five oven hi»d only cost 9 runs. Hill got 4 olf Benj nott's first dolivory, but wan quiet for i the remainder of the over. The Hist bye ! of tho day occurrod during Bennett's next over. Tho New Zealanders' fielding was exceedingly keen, and runs camo but slowly, Ficher especially bowling , very well. A wide by Bennett and a pall to the on by Hill off the same bowler for 4 brought 100 up. Hill hnmediutely drove ono back to Bennett, but tho chunco was misjudged. Callawiy -went on at tho other end, and signalled his reappearance at the crcaso by ponding down a wide. Four to Noble off til? last ball of tho over caused tho second' century to be hoisted. Uphani wont on again at the railway end, and Hill, by a pietty 4 to Ie«, brought np 210, and his own score to 00. Six ruiiß luter Olliyior was given a trial at Iho bowling cieuso. The second ball Noble sent for a single, and lfill going out to the next missed, and Boxkuiill lostn chance of stumping. Four byos were recorded. Hill reached his century in Ollivicr's next over, after just on three hours' butting, Tho batsmen continued the run-getting with steady persistence, Noble commencing to play more freely than at the start, whon ho was very streaky. With the score at 240, Hill hit Callaway to deep field, where Blacklock failed to take a chanco low down. In tho next over, Noblo miscalculated Ollivier, who had been proving Nouiowhut mizzling, mid was bowled. 240-3—42. Orogory was the next, and almost played Ollivier 1 »* first ball on. Tho play then became notable for Gregory's " l mi-stealing " tuclics, and Hill's apparent desiio lo punish Ollivicr's ,slows. Tho cmck .lefthander got an occasional boundary, but ho was ultimately templed far out of tho eieuse, and missing was brilliantly stumped by Boxshall. 265-4-118. Atmstrong made his advent, and enrotully played the remainder of the over. Gregory had two "lives" off Fisher, who took up tho bowling fiom Callaway. Tho batsman was dtopped by Blacklock in tho deep field, owing to Sims also miming for' tho catch, and by Uphani in tho slips. A little later Gregory made an uppish stroke behind tho wicket*, but clear of slip, 'and shortly afterwards was missed by Fisher at pomt — both off Ollivior. Armstrong contented himself with steady play, and it wnii mainly by Gregory's cil'orts that 290 was recorded. Five runs* later stuinjw wero drawn for tho day with it total of 295 for four wickets.
