MAINTENANCE OF THE NAVY. THE COLONIES' SHARE. [press association.] LONDON, Bth December. The Times expresses the hope that the Right Hon. A. J. Biilfour will re? ceive in a sympathetic spirit the suggestions made by the deputation from the Imperial Federation Defence Committee, viz., that a Colonial Confeience bo convened to give primary consideration to the necessity of Imperial Co-operation, and the maintenance of the navy in order to retain Butain's maritime supremacy. At present, says The Tunes, the colonies hardly realise their origin. Their continued existence in tranquillity and security was dependent on the British Navy.' It was for them to say whether they would continue to accept the advantages of our naval supremacy as a priceless gife, or assume an equitable share in the heavy burden it entails. Lord Meath, replying to Mr. G. L. Reid's suggestion in favour of Einph'e Day being celebrated on the Sovereign's birthday, stated that it was of little importance what the day was, if teaching calculated to strengthen Imperial ties was maintained in the schools throughout tho Einpirf. < LECTURES FOR COLONIAL ' SCHOOLS. KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOTHERLAND. LONDON, Bth December. Mr. H. J. Mackinder, Director of the London School of Economics, expkiined a scheme of lantern lectures for colonial schools to, impart visual knowledge of the Motherland. Mr. Lyttelton, Secretary of State for the Colonies, presided. Many Australasians were present. Mr. Lyttelton applauded the utility of Mr. Mackinder's fectures, and thanked Ceyloa, Hongkong, and the Straits Settlements for contributing to their cost. He hoped the movement would encourage patriotism among school children. Lord Ranfurly, late Governor of New Zealand, said there was most urgent necessity to unite the Empire ~in bonds of sympathy. He considered the lectures would .arouse interest.
