4 JAPANESE SUCCESSES AT PORT ARTHUR. MORE FORTS OCCUPIED. [press association.] (Received December 8, 8.12 a.m.) LONDON, 7th December. ■ A heavy fire from Metre Hill, which has just been captured by the Japanese, compelled the Russian troops to evacuate the Akasaka Hill fort, which was subsequently occupied by General Nogi's forces. The Japanese have also occupied two additional forts. WARSHIPS DAMAGED. A GREAT CONFLAGRATION. LONDON, 7th December. The Japanese Legation announces that between last Saturday and Monday the naval guns of the besiegers bombarded Port Arthur harbour. Several vessels were hit — the Pobieia and the Retvisan repeatedly. \ On Monday afternoon the enemy's powder-magazine south of Pofyushan exploded, causing a great conflagration for over two hours. On tho same day heavy guns were worked effectively on the Russian ships, including the Poltava, raising thick smoke, which lasted an hour. The siege of Fort Sungshushan and the "forts to the east is continuing day and night. On Sunday last tho Japanese captured two quick-firers in a caponiere of Fort Erlungshan. On Monday heavy "guns renewed the bombardment of the Russian warships, with satisfactory result. The attack is still continuing. THE POLTAVA SUNK. (Received December -8, 8.12 a.m.) LONDON, 7th December. The Russian armoured ship Poltava (10,960 tons, 16.2 knots) has been sunk at Port Arthur. The armoured cruiser Bayan (7726 tons, 22 knots) is aground, and the battleship Retvisan (12,700 tons, 18.knots) has been seriously damaged, and is listing heavily. ANOTHER BRIEF ARMISTICE. •_ % I (Received December 8, 8.12 a.m.) LONDON, 7th December. Another Brief armistice has been arranged for the removal of the Russian dead. PLOT AGAINST KUROPATKIN. (Received December 8, 8.38 a.m.) LONDON, 7th December. French advices received froai St. Petersburg state that a Chinaman has been arrested at Chantsiamutun for having in his possession an infernal machine, which was intended to destroy General Kuropatkin's saloon cnrriage. THE CAROLINE. LONDON, 7th December. At the instance of the Public Prosecutor, Messrs. Roche andSinnet, the negotiators for the purchase of the Caroline froni Messrs. Yarrow and Co., have been summoned to appear at Bow-street. They are believed to be residing in France. SHIPMENTS OF COAL. (Received December 8, 7.45 a.m.) LONDON, 7th December. The British Government is experiencing great difficulty in proving the destination of coal shipped at Cardiff. It is believed that eighteen ships have been chartered to take Welsh coal to Russia and Japan during the next two months.
