« Mr. R. Ewing, of Dunedin, returned from a visit to England by the Gothic. The Hon. H. Mossman, who has been on a visit to England was a passenger by the direct steamer which arrived to-day. Mrs. Van Staveren returned from a visit to England by the Gothic, which arrived to-day. Mr. Ritchie, Secretary of the Agricultural Department, is expected back from Auckland to-night.. Colonel C. F. Roberts, C.M.G., Hon. A.D.C. to the King, will arrive in Wellington from Rotorua next week. Dr. E. S. Brett, and Dr. J. M. Davies,. who are proceeding through to Port Chalmers, were passengers from London by the Gothic. Mr. R. Ulrich, son of the late Professor Ulrich, has been appointed associate to Mr. Justice Chapman, President of the Arbitration Court. The executors of the late Mr. C. B. Izard have <made a donation of £250 to the Diocesan Board of Trustees of the Anglican Church for the purposes of a parsonage at Khandallah. The Wairarapa- Daily Times, according to a Masterton Press Association telegram, definitely announces the candidature of Mr. P. C> Freeth, editor of the Manawatu Daily Times, for the Palmfcrston North seat. ' A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that Sergt. John Muir, a member of the First Contingent, died at Merton this morning from consumption. Deceased eerved in the engagement at New Zealand Hill, when Sergfc. Gourley and Private Connell were killed. Mr. F. C. Jones, of Otaki, has been appointed a member of the local committee which assists in the administration of the Otaki Cottage Hospital. The appointment was made by the District Hospital Board to-day, at the suggestion of Mr. Nodine, who said that Mr. Jones took gr?at interest in the institution and would be found a willing worker. The Yen. Archdeacon Faucourt, on his return from England, is to continue to hold the office of Secretary to the General Church Fund ,of the Anglican Diocese at a salary of £200 per annum. His duties will be to further the interests of the fund, visit the country districts, and appoint collectors. Mr. J. P. Luke was to-day re-appoint-ed Chairman of the District Hospital Board, and Mr. J. Godber was re-elected Treasurer^ In returning thanks, Mr. Luke expressed regret that the Board had lost the services of Mr. G. London (Mayor of Petone), Mr. Walker (Hutt County), and Mr. R. Mothes (Petone), who had rendered excellent service in their time, and whose retirement had been chiefly necessitated by the reduction in the number of the members of the Board from nine to seven. The whole of the members of the Board were appointed to act as an Executive Committee. • The following additional promotions in the Customs Department have been decided upon : — Mr. W. B. Montgomery, landing waiter at Dunedin, to be audit clerk in the. head office, Wellington; Mr. H. R. Rice, clerk at Napier, to be junior landing waiter at Dunedin; Mr. C. 0. Trounson, clerk at Dunedin, to be statistical clerk in the head office; Mr. J. M. Hussey, clerk at Auckland, to be promoted a step at that port; Mr. J. M. O'Reilly, clerk at Christchurch, to, be transferred to Auckland; Mr. A. Barron, clerk at Timaru, to be transferred to Christchurch ; Mr. F. W. Lawrence, clerk at Christchurch, to be transferred to Timaru; Mr. W. M'lntosh, clerk at Auckland, to be transferred to Wellington; Mr. W. Oliver, clerk at Auckland, to be transferred to Dunedin.
