The Holiday Association, comprising the leading shopkeepers, is promoting a petition to have the early closing hours of the Shops and Offices Act enforced in Gisborne. WANGANUI, This Day. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Colonel Sommerville obtained £10 damagts from the Borough Council on account of an accident to a trap and occupants, caused through the negligence of the borough workmen in not properly filling in a trench in a road in which gasmains had been laid. The wheels of the trap went in the hole, and the vehicle collapsed. DANNEVIRKE, 6th December. The Black family of musicians, while touring the back blocks last week, had an unusual experience. Near Pongaroa, bullocks had to be substituted for horses owing to ' the impassable state of the roads, and at one part the coach capsized over a bank. Fortunately no one was inside. ELTHAM, 6th December. A cable message received states that E. R. Terry (the world's champion axeman), A. Clark, J. Deegan, and G. A. Goold (champion sawyer) leave Tasmania on Friday for New Zealand to represent the Commonwealth at the New Zealand Axemen's Carnival, to be held on the 26th and 27th December. Mr. Leslie Rejmolds has submitted three alternative proposals for a water and drainage scheme for Eketahuna. It is probable that a poll of ratepayers will be taken at- an early date. The Eketahuna School Committee has protested against the proposal of the Wellington Education Board to include Labour Day in the list of school holidays.
