lI'RESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTERTON, This Day.' At the Magistrate's Court this morning a prohibited man was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment, on a charge of having liquor in his possession. WAIHI, 2nd December. A sharp earthquake was experienced here at 5.30 this evening. It was the most seveie felt for many years. A number of lesidents rushed out of their homes in alarm. NELSON, 2nd December. The attendance at the agricultural show just concluded constitutes a record, 5549 paying for admission, or 734 more than k'st year. j | WANfiANUI, 2nd December. j At- a meeting of the Harbour Board to-day, Mr. J. M'Harg, of Westland, j I wus appointed engineer and dredgemaster. In view of his approaching visit to ■ the Old Country, Mr. A. D. Willis, M.H.8., resigned the chairmanship of the Boaid. Mr. Willis has been a member for twenty-five years and chairman eight times. A resolution expressing ' regret at the resignation, and appreciation of Mr. Willis's past services was carried.
The domestic "Tom" and "Maria" have come under the ban of the Public Health Department. It has been discovered, as a result of careful investigation, that there is reasonable cause for suspecting that cats communicate such diseases, for instance, as diphtbeiia to human beings. Several cases wbich have occurred during the recent epidemic of diphtheria in" the city have been distinctly traced to cats. It is therefore urged that if anyone has a pet cat on the premises which is in any way "indisposed" it should either be at once destroyed, or handed over to the tender mercies 'of the Department, which will diagnose its complaint, and decide whether or not' the health of the community would be better were it numbered among the missing. Gaul's worli "Prince of 1 Peace" will be given next Wednesday 'night in St. Mark's Schoolroom, Sussex-square by Mrs. Mueller's pupils, assisted by an efficient orchestra, for the first time; in the colony. On the following evening Mrs. Mueller and her pupils will give a popular concert in the same building. Tht> bazaar and sale of wot.k organised by the ladies of the Kent-terrace Presoyterian Church as a means of raising contributions to the organ and missions, was closed last night, j'fhe sale was very successful, just under '£loo being raised. '
