NEGOTIATIONS FOR WARSHIPS.
RUSSIAN OVERTURES. LONDON, 29th November. Prior to the purchase by Mr. Roche of the turbine torpedo boat Caroline from Messrs. Yarrow and Co., of Poplar, on the Thames, a French firm enquired wheI ther a gunboat which was being completed at Birkenhead for the Peruvian Government was purchasable. Negotiations were opened, and the agent proved to be a Russian, who also mad© overtures to buy one oi* two swift ocean liners. The price asked, however, prevented the- transaction being carried out. The agent inspected and made enquiries concerning warships in course of completion on the Tyne, and then proceeded to London.
