DEATH OF A PROSPECTOR.

Patrick Quirk Caple^ a well-known prospector, and one ot the oldest pioneers of the West Coabt, died yesterday afternoon in the Reefton Hospital of paralysis, after a chequered and eventful cuieer. He discovered and opened up the fir&t reef on the Coast in the Moonlight district, and also erected tho first battery. Likewise, he discovered the first reef at Capleston, which place was named after him. Several places in the Otago Pass, which he prospected extensively in the early daya, still bear his name. On the advent of the Timaru Syndicate at Reefton deceased was appointed attorney and general adviser to the syndicate, retaining that position for a considerable time, after which he visited Australia, prospecting extensively there. About sir months ago- he was seized with paralysis. Since then lie had remained in a semiconscious condition in the Reefton Hospital until a few days prior to his death, when he recovered his speech for a short time. He was 74 years of age, and was unmarried.
