LOCAL AND_ GENERAL. During last session the Colonial Secretary informed Parliament that the Representation Commissioner would set about defining the boundaries of the city single electorates at an early period of the lecess. It appears, however, from some remarks by the Premier at Christchurch that that promise cannot be kept. As the law at present stands, he said, the triple electoiates will only cease to exist on the dissolution of the present Parliament. It van quite possible that some amendment of the Act would require to be made early next session, to enable the Representation Commissioners to adjust and define the boundaries preliminary to the dissolution, as there would not be time to so adjust the boundaries between the dissolution of Parliament and the ensuing election. The cities had been single electorates previously, and the Representation Commissioners should not have much difficulty in fixing the new boundaries satisfactorily, and with a proper appreciation of the distribution of population. The Hon. C. H. Mills, who has returned from a visjt to Mariborough, says that he has never seen that district looking better. The farmers are in good heart, and splendid crops are expected. He considers that the annual show of the Marlborough A. and P. Society last week was the best which has yet been held in the district. The display of agricultural implements was very meagre, but the entries in all the other classes were remarkably good, and there was a record attendance of the public.
