PERSONAL MATTERS.
A London cablegram received to-day states that the Countess of Onslow sails by the Ophk for Mew Zealand. Mr. D. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, intends to leave for England on the 10th inst. He expects to be away for about six months. King Edward, a cable message states, conferred the Commandership of the Royal Victorian Order on daptain Scott, who conducted an Antarctic expedition in tha ship Discovery. An Auckland Press Association telegram states that Professor Carollo, the well-known gymnastic instructor, died suddenly this morning from heart disease Mr. J. H. Witheford, M.H.R., will leave on a trip round the world at the end of this month, and will probably not return to New Zealand until after the commencement of next session. Mr. Witheford entertained his fellow members last night, and on the motion of the "Premier those present wished him bon voyage and a safe return to the colony. Last night's Gezette contains notifications that the appointment of H. J. Redwood and T. B. Segrief as Acting Honorary Captains of Nos. 1 and 2 Companies of St. Patriok's College Rifle Cadets has been approved, and tliat the resignation of Acting Lieutenant T. S. Hamer, No. 6 Company, New Zealand Garrison Artillery Volunteers, has been accepted. Last night, Air. R. M'Nab, M.H.R., v was presented with a gold locket by his Temperance friends in the House of Representatives. • The presentation was made, in the presence of seventeen members of the House, by Mr. G. Fowlds, M.H.R., who said that the token was a recognition of the good work which Mr. M'Nab had done during the session for the Temperance cause. Acknowledging the presentation, Mr. M'Nab prophesied that the next election w-ould result in a decided stregthening of the ranks of the Temperance members in the House,' and stated, by way of comparison with the friction of former days, that the Nolicense members were more friendly and more in sympathy with the members of "the other side."
