Reports from Mangaia, in the Cook Group of Islands state that much friction exists between a seccion of the natives and Major Large, Resident liuropean Magistrate and 'Agent. The authority ot the latter is disputed. The foremost affected natives aie Daniel and Meringitangi. The foiiner 'claims to ke King of Mangaia, and the latter Judge of the Islands, though" removed from that oflice on the arrival of Major Large four months ago. Colonel Gudgeon, Resident Commissioner, has been asked to deal with the offenders.
