SUICIDE AT CHRISTCHURCH.

m [BS TELEGRAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHUBCH, 30th October.John William Jones; thirty-two years of age, committed suicide yesterday by shooting himself through the head. He was a single man, residing with his parents in Opawa, and since his return with the contingents from South Africa two years ago had done no work. He left home yesterday morning about nine, and did not return, though he had arranged to go to Dunedin by express at eleven. Search was made, and the body was found by two brothers late in the day. Deceased left letters announcing his intention of committing suicide. He was well known here some years ago as champion amateur cyclist. The Qustoms revenue collected at the port for the month ending to-day totalled £52,060 5s 6d, and the beer duty for the same period £806 10s 6d. The figures for the corresponding month last year were £64,189 7s 3d and £858 14s 4d respectively. To-day's Customs revenue amounted to £4069 5s Id. The Paparoa, which arrived from London on Saturday, brought a consignment of stock for Lyttelton, including a horse and sixteen sheep. The Public Works Department's engineer (Mr. Holmes) made an inspection of the "shopping route" of the electric tramway system this afternoon. Mr. Holmes ran a car over the line from Kent-terrace along Vivian, Ingestte, and Cuba streets, connecting with the main line at Winder's corner. Perfect summer weather prevailed throughout the greater part of the day yesterday, but a heavy tropical shower fell late in the afternoon. Just under 13in of rain fell during the month ended at 9 o'clock this morning, the exact record at the Colonial Observatory being 12.94 in for seventeen days. This is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Wellington, the previous record being 12.45 in, for December, 1884. The average rainfall for October is 3.93 in, but this fall was nearly reached on one day (the 13th) during the present month, when the fall was 3£in. Fine weather again prevailed this morning, but a breeze raised a disagreeable quantity of dust in town. The shade temperatures in the four centres at 9 o'clock this morning were: At Auckland 60deg, Wellington 60deg, Christchurch 55deg, and Dunedin 58deg. Meeers. F. J.
