STATE CLOTHING FACTOR"*. LOSS ON THE YEAR'S WORK. SYDNEY, This Day. The report on the State Clothing Factory shows a, loss on the year's transactions of £1795. NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAYS. SYDNEY, This Day. The Railway Commissioners informed a deputation which was asking for cheap country rates that if the railways were to be made to pay at once it would be necessary to reduce the wages and increase the rates. ' ' THE MONEY MARKET. NEW .SOUTH WALES LOANS.. (Received October 27, 9*50 a.m.) . . SYDNEY, This Day. In the Assembly the Treasury Bills Bill passed all its stages. The Premier, Mr. Carruthers, explained that he required the Bill to, enable th? Government to prepare for the redemption of a million pounds' worth of bills maturing in London on Ist March and two millions in Sydney in 1905-6. The present statp of tfie money market made it doubtful if a loan could be raised advantageously. T}ie Agent-General had advised the Government, after consulting with the London and Westminster Bank, that it would be better to issue new bills, as the time was inopportune fo,r a longdated loan. It would also be necessary to pay a higher rate of interest for New j South Wales loans in the, near future. Mr. Carruthers added that he was not certain whether he would not issue inscribed stock, but supposing the advices in January showed that the market was unfavourable, the Government would be safeguarded if it had power to issue bills. TAXATION IN TASMANIA. (Received October 27, 9.51 a.m.) HOBART, This Day. The deadlock regarding' the Government taxation proposals has been settled, a compromise having been arrived at as' the result of a free conference of both Houses. TRAMS 'IN COLLISION. NUMBER OF PASSENGERS INJURED. SYDNEY, 26th October. Two trams collided in George-street today through jumping the points. Five passengers were injured. Shortly after the traffic was got into working onter again another similar accident occurred at the same place. Four passengers were injured ;n; n the second accident, one being rather seriously hurt. FEDERAL- POLITICS. MELBOURNE, V 26th October. Mr. Isaacs's attack on the Government collapsed to-night. After further debate Mr. Isaacs said that in face of Mr. Reid's statement regarding the constitution of the Tariff Commission he would withdraw his motion if Mr. Reid promised to consult Mr. Watson on the personnel of the Commission, so'as to make it acceptable to both sides of the House. Mr. Reid agreed to consult Mr. Watson. FIRE ON A STEAMER. BRISBANE, 26th October. At 8 o'clock last night a fire was discovered in a hold of the steamer Peregrine, bound north. Initial efforts at extinguishing the fire proving unsuccessful, the vessel headed back to Brisbane. The crew partially flooded the hold, and by the' time Brisbane was reached the fire' was out. The extent of the damage is not at present known. Two officers suffered from the fumes. (Received October 27, 9.51 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. Some of the Peregrine's plates were buckled by the heat. The damage to the cargo is considerable. The work of discharging is proceeding. NIL DESPERANDUM.
