PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

♦ ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY. The Society for the Protection of Women and Children held its annual meeting last evening in the City Council Chambers, Lord Plunket presiding. Apologies were received for the absence of Mrs. Rhodes, Dr. Isabel Watson, Revs. J. Paterson and J. Dawson, and Messrs. J. G. W. Aitken and W. H. P. Barber, M's.H.R. The annual report of the Society has been already published. The retiring President, ' Mrs. W. A. Evans, in presenting the report, expressed regret at the absence of the incoming President, Mrs. Atkinson. Having^ welcomed His Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Evane addressed herself to the work of the Society as covered in the report. With regard to the Premier's memorandum on the preservation of child life, the society, while agreeing on the whole with the Premier, did not agree with the principle of putting everything on tho State, and with the* multiplication df maternity homes. But she feared the, session was growing too late for anything to be done in this connection. His Excellency Lord Plunket, in moving the adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet, said the appointment of lady members of charitable bodies was being more and more recognised, especially in Ireland, and, they were being appointed more and more generally. He would be expressing the feelings of all in thanking the Premier for his memorandum, land the Society for its advice thereon. Without expressing an opinion either way, he would do all he could to help, in a small way, the work of the Society. Mr. J. Duthie seconded the adoption of the report. He had no doubt the Premier was still working out the problem of the preservation of child life, on which the Society had contributed its opinions. The report was unanimously adopted. Mr. A. R. Atkinson, after referring to the Society's good record in court, said the greater part of its work was done out of court, and he could speak of the Society's moral suasion. He noticed with pleasure the success of lady members of the Benevolent Trustees, and the good Work done by the Society's Secretary, Mrs. Waters. The Rev. J. K. Elliott advocated that the Legislature should take further steps in the interests of indigent children. Offences against women and children should be punished with the lash. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year. — President, Mtj». A. R. Atkinson; Vice-Presidents, Lady Stout and Mrs. W. A. Evans; Hon. Treasurer, Mrs. M. F.
