WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. SECOND DAY'S RACES. Compared with last year, speculation at the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, was concluded on Saturday, showed a falling away, though the general results must be regarded as satisfactory. The investments on the second day totalled £9817, making £18,395 for the meeting, as against £20,878 last year. The attendance on each day was large, the racing was interesting, and the perfect weather helped materially in making the outing enjoyable. The arrangements throughout worked smoothly, thanks to the care' exercised by the stewards and the Secretary (Mr. A. E. Whyte). The big event — ithe Pearce Handicap — resulted in Lass-o'-Gowrie adding to the laurels she won on the previous day. Nine out of the ten acceptors went to the post, Convoy being the best-fancied in the betting market, with Lass-o'-Gowrie seventh on the list. The mare took a prominent part in the proceedings from the start, and when the field entered the straight, she went to the front and won a gamely-run race with something in hand. There were 136 tickets under her name on the machine out of a total of 1417, and she paid a dividend of £7. Convoy ran a good race, but the pace was too solid for him. Ghoorka also showed to better advantage than he did on Thursday, and for a mile the Lochiel colt shaped' really well. Mahutonga, who fretted a good deal at the starting post, finished fourth. Full Cry did not start. Twelve started in the Hutt Park Handidcap, which was won by Blazer. Bounce, on the strength of his running on the first day, together with his handy impost, inspired the confid!ence of backers, was made favourite. But the aged winner of the Wainui Handicap never left the result much in doubt, and he won comfortably. Quickfire and Regulation filled second and third places respectively. Loch Erne, who was well fancied, was not very quick off the mark, and finished fourth. The totalisator on the double — the Pearce Handicap and Hutt Park Handicap— attracted 1070 tickets, and was picked by ten investors, who each received £96 6s. Coxswain was selected by the majority of speculators to win the Spring Trial Stakes, but the gelding did not get a situation. Benair, the winner, finished in a Tather sensational manner. There appeared to be nothing in the race but Somaroff and Benzai until about fifty yards from, the post, where the topweight came with a great rally on the outside and snatched a • victory from Somaroff by a head. Jubilant sUpporteivs — there were 96 tickets on the winner out of 1017—^collected £7 Bs. Mr. Prosser's filly Marguerite surprised onlookers with her performance in the Juvenile Handicap, which she won in splendid style from Medallist and Boris. The favourite, Boomerang, gave a disappointing display. Ballarat made no race of the Nainai Handicap, and Defoe's defeat of Killamey came as a surprise to many. St. Winifred ran a good race in the Taiurua Hack Race, and Chivalry's win in the Spring event was a popular one. The racing throughout was a compliment to Mr. Chadwick's adjustments. Hutt Park Handicap, of 150 soys ; second horse to receive 20 soys from the stake. Seven furlongs. 141 Mr. H. Jackson's b g Blazer, aged, by St. Clair — Mountain Lily, 8.10 (King) 1 86 Mr. W. Oliver). From a straggling start, in which Exmoor fared badly, Bounce, Blazer, and Quickfire were the first to show out prominently, Regulation and Loch Erne being in the ruck. The latter improved their positions slightly at the end of four furlongs, where Quickfire was in charge, but Blazer was soon on terms with the filly, and piloted the field past the stand with three lengths in hand.
