ENTERTAINMENTS, ETC.

DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY. Miss May Duprex, the American com« dienne, made her faiewell appearance with the Dix Gaiety Company last evening, and was given a hearty send-off. Her place in the programme is bein^ filled dv the Gothan Quartette of American. Bulging comedians, who make their first appearance in Wellington this evening. Miss Dent and Messrs. Fred. Graham, Percy Denton, and other members of the company ably assisted Miss Duprez in keeping the audience well interested and amused last evening. FULLEK'S ENTERTAINERS. The xylophone music of the Johnson*, last evening attracted to His Majesty's Theatre, through rain, hail, and wind, a large attendance of people,' who demonstrated by their applause that they wero amply rewarded for their trouble. Thio clever trio is announced to appear for the last time to-morrow evening. Misses Lynne and Maisie, song and dance artists, also make their farewell appearance to. morrow. The company will be reinforced' by the Trevena sisters and others • on> Saturday. The attendance at the Art Exhibition, which is still open at the Art Gallery, has been affected by the very wet weather. Labour Day, despite the rain, was spent, in a right royal way by the sailors in. port. An all-day picnic was held in the Missions to Seamen Institute, two oi three hundred attending. Prizes, kindly given by Mrs. Aldous, were won by crewii of vessels in port. The winners were Messrs. Riches, Wallis, Sayors, Chater, Smith, Johnson, Morrisey, Chard, Leel, Parch, Anderson, and Platt. Lunch, dinnei, and tea were provided by th« members of the Harbour Lights dub, the congregation, and Mr. A. S. Collins. Games were the order of the day from 11 a.m. till 7.30 p.m., and a happiei and merrier lot of men it would havf t been hard to find in Wellington. In th« evening a grand concert was given bj Miss Picot to a crowded audience. Items were rendered by the Misses Warren, Picot, Riphardson, Randell, and Messrs Warren, Holroyd, and Smith and Masters Stevens and Picot. Eighteen men signed the pledge. The lecture on "Dramtochty," to hay« been given by Dr. Gibb last night at the Newtown Public Library, was postponed. Not only was the state of the weather such that few would venture out of doors, but breakages in the electric, light service made it impossible to light the» building. Despite the boisterous weather, there, was a fair attendance at the St. Peter'a Church bazaar last evening. The Japan, ese dances arranged by Miss E. Bsera were very much appreciated. Miss Marchant's tableaux, "Tho Welcome o\ Spring," "The Sacrifice of Iphige. nia" and "Statuary" were again well received. Another interesting item was an exhibition of club swinging by a team of young ladies from the Wellington Physical Training School. Mr. and Mrs. F. P Wilson contributed songs, and Mr. C. D Macintosh a clarionet solo. The entertain nient concluded with a nail-driving cam., petition for ladies, the winner being Mis* Andrews. The bazaar will remain open each evening until Saturday next.
