ATTEMPTS TO RECAPTURE A FORT.
REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSSES. LONDON, 3rd October. Advices from Chefoo state that the Russians at Port Arthur have made desperate attempts to retake Fort Kuropatkin, in the hope of restoring the water supply. They bombarded the position frequently, and assaulted the fort, but were repulsed. The losses were heavy on "both sides. The Russians made sorties from Port Arthur on 28th and 29th September in the direction of Pigeon Bay (westward of the town), and vainly attempted to capture the heavy guns of the Japanese. Severe fighting took place.
