LOCAL AND GENERAL. • No decision has yet been come to as to where the next rowing championship regatta shall be held. The Marlborough people are anxious that the races should be held at Picton, and have decided to guarantee a substantial sum for prizes. Wellington wants the regatta held here, and Wanganui intends to apply to have it held in that district. A fire balloon lodged on the roof of Mr. C. Smith's drapery establishment, Cuba-street, about 8 o'clock last evening, and led to the Central Fire Brigade being called out. A petition, which already contains many signatures, is in circulation in the Karori Borough, urging the Public Health Officer for the district (Dr. Valintine) to impress upon the Karori Borough Council the necessity tor proper and systematic removal of nightsoik. Findlay and Dalziel, solicitors, will represent the Seatoun Road Board in connection with the case which that Board is bringing to test the right of the, Hutt County Council to levy a special rate of lid in the £ upon property in the Makara Riding, of which the Seatoun district is a portion. The cup, which is to be called the Hallenstein Bros' trophy, is on view in the window of the New Zealand Clothing Factory's shop on Lambton-quay. Last year the firm presented a cup to the D Battery for the encouragement of rifle shooting. The remarks of the Secretary of Labour (Mr. E. Tregear) on the subject of rent and wages contained in a memorandum recently sent to the Premier are endorsed by No. 1 Branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation.
