THE MANCHURIAN CAMPAIGN.
STRENGTH OF OYAMA'S FOKOES. SHARP SKIRMISHING REPORTED. .LONDON, Ist October. Advices from Mukden state that the Japanese have fortified a position northwest of the Yentai mines. Field-Marshal Oyama's forces now facing the Russians number 144,000 infantry and 6380 cavalry, with 638 guns. The Japanese are represented as being anxious to act on the -defensive. Advices record sharp skirmishing at various points, though the casualties are described as unimportant. The Standard's correspondent at General Kuroki's headquarters says that the Russians are reconnoitring, being puzzled at the inactivity of the Japanese. The Russians, says the correspondent, are unable to realise that the Japanese, being confident of their superiority,' can afford to wait until they have completed their arrangements. The Daily Telegraph says that double the Russian estimate of Field-Marshal Oyama's forces is much likelier lo be correct.
