THE CLOTHING TRADE.
"SHODDY" GOODS. [BY TBr,E<JHAPH~FRHSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 12th September. A deputation of persons interested in the clothing trade wuited upon Mr. Qeo. Fowld, M.H.R., in reference to the proposed legislation against tho importation of material containing "shoddy. It was pointed out that if duty was put upon goods containing what was known as " shoddy," it would increase tho cost of living to those who were now able to buy a cheaper class of clqthing goods, ana it wns feared that there would be many who would not be able to meet the incrooßed cost. Mr. Powlds said it was not at all likely that any " Shoddy Bill ' would be passed this session, but an attempt was being made to increase tho duty on nil woollen goods, and persons interested in this movetnont were at present giving evidenae before the committee set up t<» deal with the whole question of local industries.
