PRISONNERS REMANDED FOR SENTENCE.

Mr. Jiuiieo Edwards to-day spoke of the hauUhip inJlictcJ on piisoners who, pleading guilty in tho lower Court, wore kept in custody for sometimes two months awaiting tht return of the Jmlgo for sentence. He icalised that it was not expedient that poisons who had pleadud guilty to serious offences &houid bet sot at huge on bail, but tho alternative of keeping them in custody was al&o open to objection. He thought it dedlftiblo that the Magistrate who knew all about tho case should have power lo Hontenco a prisoner subject to an appeal lo n Judge with the prospect of tho sentence being eithei increased or reduced. His llonour added: — "1 shall now be away fiom Auckland for over two months. If ue get the usual crop of three or four oa^Cs per week there vill tin a grout mintbrr waiting for my return."
