ORIENTAL BAY TRAM SECTION.
T9 THB EDITOR. filir,— Tho residents at Clyde-quay and Oriental Bay aro indebted to Mr. Barber for his efforts to arouso some interest on the part of City Councillors in the matter of electric car connection botweon these localities and ' tho rest of tho city. The Mayor's reply to Mr. Barber was the veriest shuttlo, and the supinencss of the Council generally is consistent with the past policy of that fatuous body in invariably treating any requirements of Ciyde-quay-Onontal Bay as of purely local significance, instead of their being, as they are always, of equal importance to tho citizons as a whole, who make it such ft favourite resort. Three months, or thereabouts, have passed since the contractors for the tramway practically finished their part ' of the work of this section. It must have been known then that the extra reclamation to widen the road on the seaward side at the two horns of the bay would be necessary to the granting of the certificate to open the section. A mere tyro could see lU- many did see it, and spoke about it. If then tho Council's expert official did not see it, or if, seeing it, he did not report upon ft, the Council should require, and see I that it gets, an explanation from tha official. But don't let the Councilors be satisfied with the theonr uhai a
storm, and a fow high tides have sprung this extra work of reclamation and seawalls upon tho rcsponsiblo parties. It is too tliin, and it isn't oven ingenious. Tho fact is it was novor intended to push On this section, and Mr. Barber will do tho public a serviro if ho finds out why. As it is, a great ideal of rovonue from this Boction lias boon lost to tho city. Wo are now told, on what appears' good authority, that it will be anothor throo months boforo tho curs, are running round horo. At tho rato tho work is being pushod ahead — about two men to tho reclamation near tho, baths, and a beginning not yot mado at tho other horn of tho bay — it will bo all that. Honce, Iho residents all along the routo ask, why not run a car as far us the baths, as a commencement; thouco extend tho sorvico to Grassstreet; then to tho present terminus when tho work is complete? The Council would find tho cars well patronised, and tho section would bo paying in something. Will Mr. Barber— and will you. Sir — move in this direction? — I am, P tc, RESIDENT. Oriontal Bay, 29th August.
