tor TEi,KGRArir — rnsss association.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A destructive fire occurred in the city early this morning. Tho top story in Messrs. Wardell Bros. 1 building in Ca.shelstreet wias gutted, and extensive damage indicted throughout thoir premises by fire ainl water. The building is a four etory ono, orected about three yean* ago, and the ground floor is used by Messrs. Waixtell Bros, as a giocery shop and store. Mr. Bain (dentist), Mr. HotmeiaUir (tailor), Mr. Wright (music teacher), ami Messrs. Atkinson Bros, (agents) rent rooms in tho upper floors, ami tho greater part of tho top noor was rented by Mr. W. E. Sorwll (photographer). The fire started in tbo top story, apparontly in tho photognipliio studio, and owing to tho heroic efforts of the Yin Brigade m roufincd there, although enormous ckmtvgo was done throughout tho whole building by water. It is estimated that tho total damage to the building and stock and' stocks of tenants is £7000. Following are f J>e insurances: — Wardoll's stock, in tho Now Zealand Office, £2000,4Jn tho Victoria Office £650, and in tho Royal Exchange £700; total, £3350. SorreU's photographic studio : In the Phoenix Office, £400. Mr. Hofmoistor's (bailor) : In tho National Ofliro, £55. Atkinson's (warehouseman) : In the Phoeuix Oflico, £700. Mr. Bain (dentiat): In the Union Office, £250. Mr. Snuilo (dentist) : In tho New Zealand Ofiioe, £150. Dr. Clayton (consulting rooms) : In tbo Liverpool, London, and Globe Office, , £25. Kv. Wright (music teacher) was uninsured. Tho building was insured for £4500 as follows : — Royal Exchange, £2000 ; Mancheater, £1000; South British, £1000; and Northern, £500.
