KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Karori Borough Council was last evening presided over by Councillor Henderson. The loiiowing Councillors were also in attendance : — Mw«rs. Cook, Dnnent, Thomas, Ne.wcomhe, Russell, Fearn, Spieru, and Williams.* Mr. 11. Smith wrote stating that he had purchased section 121 in lUncdonaldstreet, Beautiful Karori, containing on* acre, and asking permission to obtain spoil from opposito the section for the purpose of rilling up a gully in tho block. The letter was refeired to the Public Works Committee. An application made by Mr Isaac Clnrlc for permifwion to deposit earth on v portion of the Old Militury-rond, which needed filling in, was also referred to the Public Works Committee. On behalf of Mr. Ridge, Messrs. Mententh nnd Beere undertook to maintain i the streets constructed by him, snrt posned by tho Council, for six months, in consideration of it signing his plan. They ntao enclosed a cheque for £3, being the i half -share- payable by Mr. Ridge for j cost of filling in the gap in Vcra-strect us estimated. Should the amount prove insufficient, thoy undertook to mnkq< up the deficiency. The letter was received, and tho 'matter is now practically settled. The claim for compensation made by Mr. Tnrr for damages to his property by tho Council placing a culvert on it wa*» discussed. Mr. Tnrr appeured personally, and said he was willing to accept £2U in settlement of the whole matter. The offer was acrepted, and it was decided to inform Mr. Tnrr's solicitors that the claim had been settled. ■ The Council some time ago wrote to the Kclburne and Karori Tramway Company, Ltd., asking it to confirm a promise mado nt a meeting between the Council, and the directors of (he compan) for n jd rate up or down the Kolbume tramway on a through ticket to Karori In reply to this the secretary of the company wrote pointing out that there was no promise made of such a through rate, aud mentioned that before considering the question the directors would like to have tome particulars relative to the na ture of the proposed service to the borough. The letter wns. referred to the Finance Committee. Owing to the limited capacity of the destructor to dispose of lefuse, the City Council wrote stilting that it was unable to remove household refute fiom the cit.v 'drainage area within the Borough of Knrori. It also stated that it hud under consideration the question of maintaining a portion of Kuron-io.'id adjoining the Botanical G.udi-ns, mid would give its reply nt an early date Thu Town' Clerk was authorised to paj £120 interest on loans 1 and 2 to the Sinking Funds Commissioners, und £45 on No 3 loan to Mr. Brandon. Thfc Public Works Committee leportcd that it had inspected tho Miiiuuy-ioad, and ••estimntrd that the track ie<|iiiredfrom' the Orangi-road to the Gurtlcn-road wotild cost about 20« per nhiiin, exclusive of culverts. The length would be about eighteen chains, and two culverts would be reqtiired at a cost of about 12a Further consideration was deferred until next meeting. Another clause of the report recom mending tho placing of n culvert acrowt the road nt lhe junction of Kupapa and West roads was approved.
