MELROSE LOANS.
TO THE EDITOIt. Sir— On the Ist July, at Island Bay, a meeting of ratepayers of Mclrosc V\ v ara will bo held to consider the proposals for borrowing £77,000 for construction of tramways to the different suburbs. Now, it nppcnis that very few of tho ratepayers nro taking any interest in this important matter. A hundred thousand pounds is treated as a mere nothing, unless from the point of view that it would bo nice lo have it in circulation. The costs of three tramways are also lumped into ono loan, m> that it is impossible to vote for one tramway that niny bo considered necessary without- voting for two ihai, may be considered absolutely supcrfloufc Nor does the division of the money soem to bo mado apparently on a. fair scale. For instance, Island Bay has only £17,820 appropriated to it. while Kilbirnie is allotted double that amount. There is a!,so a vote to bo taken for £33,000 for street improvement in the Klelrose Suburbs, and niiuiy ratepayers might consider that their own interests would be better served by improvements in that respect than by tramways laid in the interests of speculative land jobbers. I trust that those persons at the poll will not bo so apathetic as they now appear to be. — 1 am, etc., C. "W, TANNER. Lambton-quay, 2ist June.
