Tho usual conference between tho' members of Parliament and tlie Auckland Chamber of Commerce prior to tho session of Parliament Avas held yesterday. Railway construction was dealt with at considerable length and an important suggestion was mado with a view to opening up tho native lands, namely, that native lands should" be acquired by the Government under tho Land for Settlements Act in tho same way as lands owned by Europeans, and that fho Public Trustee should hold the value of tho land in trust for tlie nativo owners till the titles wore ascertained by tho Land Courts. Tho "iniquity of freeholders having to pay land tax while leaseholders escape" was also dealt with. Mr. F. Lawry, M.H.R., in the course of bis speech, justified the action of tho Government in straightening the Hutt railway, biit assured tho meeting that tho duplication of tho Auckland-Penroso line will bo provided for this year, and that tho work will be completed four years before the duplication of tho Hutt lino.
