NEW ZEALAND GRADUATES.

SIR ROBERT STOUT AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION. [BY TELEOBAI'H — I'KKSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 20th June. Sir Roboifc Stout has wiitten to Mrs. Nicol, Secretary of tho New Zealand Natives' Association (women's brunch) on the question of "New Zealand giaduates and tho Auckland Hospital Board." Ho says ho regrets to Jiear that the Aucklund Hospital Board did nofc avail itself of tho services of New Zealand medical gradualos, and expresses his conviction that "training in New Zealand is equal, if not superior, to that in Melbourne." "One Piofessor of a University of Edinburgh stated that ho thought the tinio had almost come when Ne\V Zealand students, who had spent two years in tho Otago Medical School, should bo hnndienpped, as they were carrying off most of the prizes." "I am stiongly of opinion," says Sir Robert, "that wo should follow American rather than English models for our Univorsity, and that our highest educational institutions should be fitted to help all classes of intelligent people, engineers, farmers, miners, sailors, etc., as well as literary men ; and Mere this done the University system would have a greater houl upon tho people of the colony. At present, compared with many other conntries, wo arc doing little for University education. We are far behind many countries in Europe and far behind America. If wo wish to become a prosperous and noble nation, we shall have to spend a great deal more money on education than we have yet spent."
