AUCKLAND, 27th January. At a meeting of tho Council of Iho Chamber of Commerce to-day Mr. S. Va.ilo enquired whether the Chamber intended to move further in logard to tho preferential tnritf question. Tko President explained that the principle had been affirmed by tho Chamber, nnd he thought tho desirable courso was to remain quiescent for a timo longer, watching developments. Tho Now Zonlnnd legislation pawed on tho subjoct was brilly criticised. It was described by Mr. It. Hobbs as "monstrous." Mr. Aickin suggested that expert opinion should bo obtained on tho legislation—that Iradeupcoplo und merchants affected bo nuked to make recommendations with a view of seeming amendments next, session. On tho Miggfatiou of the President, Mr. Vaile gave notico of motion (o <licmt«? preferential and reciprocal trade proposuls at tho next monthly meeting.
