SCHEME OF A RUSSIAN SYNDICATE.
[rIIESS ASSOCIATION.! ST. PETERSBURG, 23rd Dec. A Russian Syndicate, with a capital of four millions, has 'been formed to acquire the Chalcis Peninsula, tho Izvor or Milio, and oilier mines, with a view to strengthening Russia's hold on Mount Athos. [Tho Chalcis Peninsula is on the south of Macodouiu, and htvs three tongues of land projecting into tho iEgean Sea, Mount Athos being at tho extremity of the eastern one. The Mount is inhabited by a community of monks,' numbering about six thousand. It is difficult to sco ho*v the working of mines on the peninsula could \ strengthen Russia's hold on the mountain, or why it should be dosired if It were possible. In all probability the venture is purely, commercial, having no political significance.]
