Mary T« Punt went out on tho evening in qaeff*tion, leaving her brother George, "wh&i she was quite sure, was sober, with the child. George Te Puni «iid he went to sle6p on & mattres^ on the floor, leaving the candle burning by his head. Th« child was then in ' another room. He was awakened by the child screaming, aUa found its clothes alight. He put them out and sent for tho doctor. Dr. Hamilton said he sent the child to the Wellington Hospital on the following day as, its condition waa serious. He found that I some of the bandages had be^n taken off | and replaced. Dr. Ewart said the wounds wore very well dressed when tho child i was brought to the Hospital, but the rei moval of the dressings referred to by Dri ' Hamilton waa inadvisable, as the maii^, object was to keep air from the burns. ! The child got woree d«y after day until it 'died from, blood poisoning caused by ' the burns. Tho child seemed to have- no vitality. Dr. Ewart thought an ordinaryhealthy child would have got well. Mrs 1 . Herdman said she had heard on every hand that Emma Te Puni was very fond of the child, and had sho been home tht accident would not have happened. A verdict of accidental death Was returned,' and the jnry added A rider " that so much want of care was shown that tho Te Puni family should not bo allowed to take, another child."
