An exchange states that Mr. John Wilkin, second officer of the Waihora, writing from his ship at Penang, gives rather a gruesome account of happenings on board in connection with cholera and bubonic plague, chiefly the former. On the trip from Penang to Singapore and Hongkong, with 700 Chinese coolies on board, seventy-six died. Thence they went to Amoy and Swatow, taking back to Singapore 850 Chinese, of whom 187 died on the journey. " The chief and myself," writes Mr. Wilkin, " have to do the undertaking business. Coming down this time we heM to land our passengers in quarantine. Took twenty-four from Singapore to Penang, and landed two alive on the quarantine island — same complaints, with beri-beri thrown in. We are now lying in the quarantine ground, and are likely to stop here for another ten days — that is, if nobody goes under in the meantime. Although this is a good and comfortable ship, and we have a first-class captain, we are all pretty dissatisfied, and as soon as we are able to go ashore we intend to interview the owners, and see if they cannot send men to attend to the corpses. . . • . We were all teetotallers in this ship -until a week ago, and then the doctor in Singaporb put twelve gallons of gin in our fresh water tanks. Our tanks hold 8700 gallons. Tea, coffee, soup, and everything has a suggestion of gin about it. It is simply horrible, an>i we are all longing to get ashore and have a fill up at the waterfall. " Dr. Neligan, the newly-ordained Bishop of Auckland (who arrived from Auckland last night), and Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, and Mrs. Julius (who arrived from the south this morning), are guests at Government House. An inter-club game was played between teams from Napier and Aorangi (Wellington) Hockey Clubs at Miramar this morning. A high wind militated against good play. The Aorangis won the match by 5 goals to 2. For the winners, E. Wat- , son scored 2 goals and M. Simpson (captain), I. Haybittle, and M. Heath 1 each, and for the losers Jardine and Rutherford were the scorers. i A meeting of the Executive and LegisI lative Committee- of the Municipal Associj ation will be held at the Wellington City Corporation Offices at 10.30 to morrow morning, to discuss the Municipal Corporations Bill other measures.
