A wreath &-2iit by King Edward to Halfield House- was inscribed : "Aa a mark of deepest regtiid, greatest respect, and sincor. bL friendship." Qmen Alexandra's ■wreath bore the inscription : "In memory of Lord Salisbury — universally loved and mourned as one of England's best and greatest statesmen." The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Davidson) and the local clergy officiated at the service at Westminster Abbsy. The scene recalled the funeral service of Mr. W. E. Gladstone in May, 1898. The gathering included national representatives of every section of the community. A service was also held at St. Saviour's Collegiate Church at Southwark, the majority of those present being working people. In many other parishes church services were also held. King Edward received a magnificent welcome at Vienna, and a most hearty greeting from Emperor Francis Joseph. The King will reside at Hofburg Palace during his stay. Emperor Francis Joseph, proposing King Edward's health at a banquet given in his honour, said he considered His Majesty's visit a fresh pledge of the close confidential relations between the two countries, which wera a^l the firmer owing to the absence of any political interests which might cast the shadow of a cloud over them. He thanked the British Sovereign for his many proofs of friendship. King Edward, in reciprocating the friendly sentiments, said his reception in Vienna had touched him deeply. He .vas always in the greatest sympathy with Emperor Francis Joseph and the Imperial House of Austria, and his feelings would continue of the warmest. His Majesty then appointed the Emperor a Field-Marshal of the British Army. The appointment came as a surprise to all present. Emperor Francis Joseph rose and bowed, and pressed King Edward's hand. Renter's Agency at Aden reports that Great Britain, through the good offices of the French officials at Jibutil, is checking the illicit trade in rifles. The principal sources of supply have been traced to London, from where, since the outset of the Somaliland War, have been shipped via Manchester and Marseilles to Jibutil three million rounds of Lee-Metford ammunition and large quantities of Lee-Metford-Gras rifles. GOVERNOR OF CEYLON. LONDON, Ist September. Sir H. A. Blake, Governor of Hongkong, has been appointed Governor of Ceylon in succession to Sir Joseph W. Ridgeway. [Sir Henry Blake was appointed Governor of Ceylon in 1897. Between 1884 and 1887 he was Governor of Bahamas, and later on of Newfoundland.
