THE POSITION IN NEWTOWN.
THE PREMIER A 2s T D THE PROTEST. MR. SEDDON'S REPLY. The Rev. George Bond has received the following reply which the Premier promised to give to the deputation which waited upon him a week ago to protest against the inaction of the police in the Newtown electorate : — Prime Minister's Office, Wellington, 20th August, 1903. Dear Sir, — As the principal speaker in urging the Government to meet the wishes of the deputation which waited upon me on Thursday, the 13lh inst., I have the honour herewith, as promised, to forward the following reply : The Minister for Justice was advised that prosecutions for selling alcoholic liquors should not be commenced against those persons to whom, up to the 30th June last, hotel licenses had been granted until the decision of the Court of Appeal had been given, as that Court- would determine whether or not applicants for licen&s would succeed in obtaining the mandamus prayed for. The Appeal Court gave its decision, and further enquiries have been made, and the Minister has now been advised that the position is changed. This being so, it is a matter for the Courts to deal with, and the Minister for Justice assures me action will be taken in that direction. —Yours truly, R. J. Seddon. Rev. G. Bond, Wellington.
