fPRBSS ASSOCIATION .1 AUCKLAND, 20th August. The canoe Tilikum passed Tintiri at ■nndown to-day, bound for South Africa. A public carriage drive winch has been formed through Cornwall Park will dc formally opened on Wednesday next. The trustees have issued a general invitation to the public, so that all may do honour to Sir John Logan Campbell, the donor of this great gilt to the people of Auckland. AUCKLAND, This Day. The charge of abduction against Charles Ernest Wilkinson collapsed to-day, the police reporting that tlie parties had been married. Wilkinson's solicitor explained that the accused's intention had all along been marriage, but the girl's parents refused their consent. At the Supreme Court Mr. Justice Conolly, dealing with the accused concerned in the theffs from the warehouse of John Burns and Co., admitted to probation Harold Skinner, charged with receiving stolen goods, and sentenced the others as follows : — James E. Wheeler, for receiving stolen goods, to twelve months, Edwin Farrow, for theft, to three years, and Thomas Worms, for theft, to two years' imprisonment. j CHRISTCHURCH, 20th August. J It is reported in Christchurch that a butcher who haa been carrying on business here for a long time has been offered the management of meat shops which the Premier intends to establish in England. - • % The Canterbury Dairymen's Association has decided to reduce the retail price of milk from 4d to 3d per quart from Ist September, and the wholesale price from lid to 8d per gallon. The Secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association states that merchants and citizens generally have taken up th proposal of a winter show very warmly. The necessary guarantee fond is practically assured. DUNEDIN, 20th August. A movement is on foot among both employers and employees to induce the Government to appoint an officer to see that the Arbitration Court awards are complied with. The Plumbers', Bootmakers', and Tailoreeses's Unions and employers are eaid to be favourable. It is believed if a competent man with knowledge of trade conditions were employed to interpret awards with fairness to both- sides friction would be avoided. The Hospital Board to-day discussed the system of contributions to hospital and charitable aid. Mr. T. Mackenzie thought the tax was not fair, as it was paid only by those who had real estate. A man might be wealthy in other property, but he was not liable for the rate. A resolution was passed that in any readjustment of the levy for raising the moiety now derived from local bodies the assessment should be placed on all forms of property, and not confined to real estate as at present. FEILDING, This Day. A fight occurred between two men the •worse for liquor in the train arriving here at 9.20 last night. One was knocked through the carriage window, his head and face being lacerated. He is in a serious condition from loss of blood. Later. Thomas Wilson was charged this morning before the Mayor (Mr. E. Goodbehere) with assaulting William Travers in the train last night. He was remanded to Saturday week. Travers was removed to Palmerston Hospital this morning. NELSON, This Day. Mr. Cameron, Produce Commissioner, delivered an address here last evening under the .auspices of the City Council 'and the Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was largely attended 'by fanners, fruitgrowers, and others. Much valuable information on fruit export possibilities was given. ASHBURTON, This Day. Otto Heerdegen, charged on seven different counts with breaking and entering and theft, at Ashburtou and Geraldine, pleaded guilty to five, and was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at Christchurch. The hearing of the other two counts is proceeding.
