BRITAIN'S FISCAL POLICY.
LETTER FROM MR. CHAMBERLAIN. CHANGE IN MODERN CONDITIONS. FPBESS ASSOCIATION. I (Received August 21, 7.46 a.m.) LONDON, 20th August. Mr. Chamberlain,' replying to a correspondent, said present circumstances offer no parallel to the period prior to the repeal of the Corn Laws. After emphasising the influence of railways, electricity, organisation of labour, and exercise of the suffrage, Mr. Chamberlain declared that the condition of the country in the early forties was due to many causes quite independent of the tariff, as shown by the immense prosperity of such countries as Germany arid Sweden, where the tariff had been utilised for the increase of employment of workers.
