The debate in the State Assembly on Mr. Haynes's motion, — that Sir Harry Lawson's despatch to Mr. Chamberlain in regard to preferential trade misrepresented public opinion in the State — has been, adjourned till 4th August. AUCKLAND, Bth July. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day to consider the question whether the time had arrived for discussing preferential trade between Britain and the colonies. After the President (Mr. Kent) and several others had spoken a proposal for an exhaustive discussion, and if the result were favourable to approve of a pref erentiaHariff , was carried. A YANKEE CIRCUMVENTING DODGE. NEW YORK, Bth July. The United States Steel Trust will establish a Canadian branch at Port Colborne, in order to circumvent British plans for trade preference. [Port Colborne is on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, only a few miles from the American city of Buffalo.]
