Ono of tha most- destructive firt.s that over occurred in Cartertou broke out at 4 o'clock this morning, when Mr. 11. Catt's large saddlery shop, together with tho Bank of New tfculund pmuuiCN and tho mannger'a ivsidcuce, wt-iv di'ntroyeil. The tire, which had a strong hold whi'ii first dihCoviTcd in Mr, (Jiitfu shop, gradually made its way to tho back of tho Bank of New Zealand, whicli, owing to the poor aupply of water, wan soon in flamefl. Mr. G. A. Fan brother's private residence on tho north side caught Movoral times, but the efforts of the Fire Brigade, assisted by a lnrgo number cf citizens, who formed thi>ninelv«i into a bucket brigade, «ived tho building, though it was considerably damaged. Mr. W, Parker's unoccupied shop ou the south side was waved by the strenuous exertioua of tho brigado and citizeim, a» well as Moriarty'a largo tttoro on tho oppoailo. side of tho road, which, however, wns considerably damaged. The ttaving of these promises was tno salvation of tho principal part of tho town. FcntaiiTi bonnlluglioußo wan also badly scorched, and tho ollice of the Registrar of Klcctont caught alight, but the firo wan extinguished. The origin of tho flro wns a mystery. Tho water oupply was most inadequate, and had it uqs been for the absence of wind, the' bigffeut portion of tho business premises of tho town would have been destroyed. Tho insurances arc as follows :— Catt'* stock, £125, South British; building, owned by Mr. \\. Armstrong, £125, hi tho Liverpool and London and Glob©. Fairbrother's house, £300, Liverpool and London and Globo; furniture, £150, National. Bank of New Zealand, £310, New Zealand Qflicjs. In tho places saved, but damaged, I ho losses aro covered by insurance. Mr. H. Catt is a heavy losor. MAKTON, This Day. About 2 o'clock this morning Mount View School, about four miles f rom Marton, was destroyed by fire, together with all Uio contents, including thirty years' records. Tho causo of the firo is unknown. s
