THE WELLINGTON REGATTA

Tho regatta- held yesterday under tho auHpices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club was carried out without a hitch. The entries were - poor, bub thero was some rather good racing. The > wind throughout the day was light. In the morning the races for first and Eecondcluss boats wero got off under the sail area system, but in the afternoon the yachts were handicapped according to thoir performances earlier in the day. The first prize for each of tho first-class yacht races was £10, and the second prize a trophy. Mr. A. H. Tumbull's smart little cutter loraugi won both events — Waitangi was her only rival. Dr. Fell's Manilla carried' off the first race for sec-ond-class yachts, and Messrs. R. C. , Renner and Co.'s Muritai the second race ior that class.. The first prize for each second-class race was £7 10s, and iho second prize a trophy. Mr. J. H. H. Jack, whoso yawl, the Ngaira, is* out of commission, made an efficient starter, judge, and timekeeper. The Penguin, which followed the races, earned a Targe number of the club's guests and a good many people p^aid for the privilege of making the trip round .the harbour in her. Captain M* Arthur did all in his power to make Jiis passengers comfortable, and his efforts wore ably seconded by Mr. A. G. Johnson, who wus on board as the representative of the club. Particulars of the morning races appeared in our issuo of yesterday. For tho afternoon raco for first-'cluss yachts Mr. W. Monckton declared tho following handicaps: — Mr. A. H. Turnbull'a lorangi, scr; Messrs. D. Georgeson and Co.'s Waitangi, 17min. Waitangi crossed the starting-line first, but ehe was soon overhauled and passed by the loraugi, •which kept increasing the lead, and sne was about fifteen minutes ahead when rounding the Korokoro buoy for the run to the Queen's wharf. Waitangi was unable to carry a topsail, and as the wind was light she wbs sluggish. lorangi, on the other hand, was full of life, and moved through the smooth water at a fine rate. She finished the face alone, Waitangi returning to her moorings owing to the wind getting light. Mr. Turnbull sailed his own boat in both races with great skill, and was warmly congratulated on his double win. The following were the handicaps for the afternoon race for second-class yachts : — Dr. Fell's Mahina, scr ; Messrs. W. Johnson and Co.'» Siren, 7min ; Messrs. B. C. Renner and Co.'s Muritai,, llmin. A good start wfl» effected, and a fine race wav witnessed. Siren came home at 4hi'3 53min ssec, Mahina. finishing only twelvo eeoonds behind her. Muritai was a good third, 48seo behind Mahina, but on time allowance she takes first prize, and Siren, the second prize. Mr. S. T. Silver's Karaka was the only entry for each of the two races for thirdclass boats, and she sailed over the course on each occasion. The competitors in tho Arawa Sailing Club's race held yesterday were. — Mahaki, scr ; Taipari, 2min ; Te Aroa, lOmin ; Mahutu, 15min ; Greyhound, Mary Ann, and Muriel, 25mln ; Viola, 30min. The course was from the Queen's Wharf, round the Hope Shoal and Koro« k6ro buoys, and back to the starting point. The boats were started on the Mark Foy system, each one being sent away according to her handicap. Thus the scratch boat was the last one to cross the starting line, and the first one to complete tho course was declared the winner. Tho yachts finished as follpws : Tnipari, lhr ll^min ; Muriel, lhr 18min ; Mnhaki, lhr IBmin 45sec } Te Aroa, lhr 20min ; Mahutii, lhr 26min 45sec ; Viola, lhr 37£ se c; Mary Ann, lhr 40min. Greyhound did not finish. Mr. O. Freyberg was starter and time-keeper.
