HARBOUR BOARD.
At the monthly meeting of tho Harbour Board yesterday afternoon there were present: Messrs. H. Beauchamp (Chairman), Hon. F. H. Fraser, M.L.C., Messrs W. T. Wood, N. Reid, M. Caselberg, J. ©. W. Aitken, M.H.R., W. Cable, R. Mothes, T. M. Wilford, M.H.R., aiul D. 'J. Nathan/ The bank pass-books showed: Current account, debit balance, £1887 4s sd; imprest wages account, credit balance, i>blb; on fixed deposit, £55,000. Payments:. For accounts and wages, £8228 ci a j * P ro ? ress 011 contracts, £720 ys od; for salaries for December, £604 Us 7d. Total, £9553 19s 2d. J-ue Chairman reported that theGover-nor-m-Louncil lias approved the plans for the widening and extension of the Railway Wharf; that as the body of the wharf cannot be extended until the berth on the eastern side has been dredged it is proposed to complete the breastwork' stating by day labour, so as to lengthen the existing berth and thus render it more valuable. That the Governor-in-Council has approved plans for contract No 117 for concrete wall and watercourse extension at Te Aro,. being the first contract in connection with the Graving Dock work and that tenders will be called, closing at the next monthly .Board meeting. That the Auditor and Controller-General has certined to the Board's statements of ac fnT™ 01 * he P e «°d of nine months ending 30th September; that the accounts are m the hands of the printers and will be circulated to the members of the Board as soon as they are printed; that a special meeting will be held in accord?£t v secbion 55 of the Harbours Act IS7B, afc noon on Monday, the 19lh of January, 1903, for the purpose of adopting and passing same. That the Engineer was authorised by the Wharves and Accounts Committee to negotiate with the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, for the sale bo them of portion of the Temperley transporter gear; that the company is prepared to purchase the Temperlcy portion of the gear at £150; the Engineer was empowered to sell the same. Ihe report was adopted.
The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended : That in future all the town members of the Board be summoned to every meeting of the Wharves and Ac.counts Committee; that in future the annual contracts be subdivided so as to separate the hardware and ironmongery from the ship chandlery and oils and colours; that the name of the imprest wages account operated upon by the treasurer and accountant jointly be changed from "imprest wages account" to "imprest account," juid that the impresses have authority to use the funds for urgent purposes as well as for wages ; that the request of the Melrosc Borough Council for permission to widen Childers-terrace at Kilbirnie and a portion of the Evans Bay road be approved, provided the roads be made a chain in width; that further particulars be sought from the Melrose Borough Council in respecfc to their request for permission to reclaim part of Evans Bay for the purpose of forming a recreation ground. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £9553 were passed for payment. (For continuation of News gee page 7. )
